Teaching Topics
We believe that teaching topics is a great way for children to learn. Every day children are constantly bombarded outside of schools by a variety of things like television and radio. Topics offer a way of engaging with them. Unlike some other teaching methods, topics offer a very flexible teaching tool. They allow you to teach children of differing abilities and enable you to teach a variety of subjects. Teaching using topics can be very rewarding because children often seem motivated and interested in them. They love to find out new information and explore in an unstructured environment. As a teacher this opens up great possibilities for teaching. At one level you might say: "Find me a picture of a fire engine and write a sentence about it." At another level you might say: "What emergency services do you know and why are they important?" Both of these teaching levels can be taught using the same topic material. The first level simply involves looking at the pictures, perhaps cutting them out, and helping the child. The second involves reading text and the child carrying out some form of evaluation and 'pupil-led' thinking. Topics prove their worth over and over again. Dynamic lessons Teaching using topics however, goes further than being able to adjust the lesson dynamically to suit the ability of pupils. Topics also enable you to offer children variety which helps to keep them interested. Children love finding out about things even if it's just looking at pictures. Children love to put context and understanding into their world. Learning Huddle is all about teaching with topics. We believe in the strength of teaching using topics. Unlike many teaching methods, topics enables you to blend together numeracy, literacy, art and many other subjects. To help you, Learning Huddle provides worksheets, quizzes and other material: information and help to allow you to focus on the teaching. |
