Rivers and coasts

Rivers and coasts is a topic that children find easy to relate to.  Pupils will all have encountered rivers and coasts and many of them will have been in rivers and the sea.  This background knowledge pupils have picked up makes this a powerful topic for learning.  Pupils will enjoy finding out all about what is happening in the rivers and the coasts they encounter. We've included two example pages, one about The water cycle and one about Pollution.

Like all of our topics, all of the pages in this topic can be printed out for use in the classroom.  Pupils can try to identify where in the world the main rivers are and create information sheets to stick onto a world map.

We cover the major aspects of rivers and coasts:

- All about water
- Plants and animals
- Features of rivers and coasts
- Details about the major rivers
- Life on and around rivers

The photographs and text provide great resources for the pupils to choose from.  All of the pages provide quick links to other parts of the topic and include our "internal page" adverts.

Adverts encourage pupils to fully explore the topic but include no offsite links.  Pupils feel like they are exploring and teachers can be confident it's safe for them to explore.

We pick out interesting details about rivers and coasts and focus on things that children might have already have heard about.  This helps the children to feel at ease with the topic and so more inclined to learn.  For example:

- Major rivers like the Amazon or the Nile
- Costal conservation
- The water cycle
- Marches, mud flats and saltmarshes
- The need to save water
- Rock pools

  and many more ...

We try hard to make sure the information covered is relevant and child friendly.

The pages in the Castle topic are filled with photographs and easy to read text.  Pupils can click on all the photographs.  Clicking on the photo launches a new page (or browser tab) which then shows a larger version of the photograph.

The larger photos are great for building classroom displays or for undertaking classroom activities.

One idea is to create a conservation wall.  The pupils design a large wall display explaining the importance of rivers and coasts.  Pupils also create another wall showing all about pollution and the need for conservation to protect the rivers and coasts.  Finally the pupils each keep a workbook detailing the activities they are undertaking both at school and at home to conserve rivers and coasts.
