Mars

Mars is a
planet in our Solar System.
Mars is the 4th
furthest planet from the sun. It lies between Earth and
Jupiter. |

The
climate on Mars is the most similar to Earth’s out of every
planet in the Solar System. Scientists think Mars is the planet
we could be most likely to live on in the future.
- Mars used to have a lot of water.
This has evaporated over billions of years. There is still
water underground and frozen on polar ice caps.
- The planet has a lot of mountains
and canyons. The largest canyon on the planet is the same
size as the width of America!
- Mars has the Solar System’s biggest
volcano. This is called Olympus Mons.
Mars
is a fascinating planet that we are only just beginning to
discover. Here are some facts about Mars that we know:
- It has 2 moons. They are called
Deimos and Phobos.
- The planet is named after the Roman
god of war.
- Mars is about half the size of
Earth.
- It is also called the ‘Red Planet’
because it looks reddish. This is because there is a lot of
iron oxide on the surface. This is red and gives the planet
its colour.
- There are deserts on Mars.
- Mars rotates at a similar speed and
has similar seasons to those we have on Earth.
- A year on Mars is twice as long as
a year on Earth.
