Planets and the Solar System

This topic always gets children excited.  Pupils are fascinated with the stars and the limitless possibilities they hold.  They love learning all about our solar system and its planets.  We've included two example pages, one about The Big Bang and one about The planet Mars.

Like all of our topics, all of the pages in this topic can be printed out for use in the classroom.  It's really fun and simple for children to cut and paste pictures of the planets and then try to place them in the right.  You (or the pupils) can also easily copy and paste the text and images into another document which enables the easy creation planet cards or other planet materials.

We cover the major aspects of the Planets and the Solar System:

- All about the solar system features
- Finding out what a planet is
- Learning about individual planets
- All about exploring the solar system
- Thinking about the future of the solar system

The pages and photographs provide a great set of resources for the pupils to choose from.  All of the pages provide quick links to other parts of the planets topic and include our "internal page" adverts.  These adverts encourage pupils to fully explore the topic but include no offsite links.  Pupils feel like they are exploring and teachers can be confident it's safe for them to explore.

We've picked out interesting parts of space that children might have already have heard of.  This helps the children to feel at ease with the topic and so more inclined to learn.  For example:

- Jupiter
- Mars
- NASA
- Black holes
- Dwarf planets
- The big bang

  and many more ...

We try hard to make sure the information covered is relevant and child friendly.

The pages in the Planets and the Solar System topic are filled with photographs.  Pupils can click on all the photographs.  Clicking on the photo launches a new page (or browser tab) which then shows a larger version of the photograph.

The larger photos are great for building classroom displays.  A great use for them is to build a wall showing all the areas within the Planets and Solar System pages.

One idea is to turn the classroom into outer space by filling the walls with information on the planets and space.  You could put up black paper spattered with whit dots for stars.  This is easy to do.  Get a tooth brush, dip it in whit paint and then run your finger backwards across the bristles.  Little white dots will spray over the page.  Be careful to do it in the right direction though!
