Mini-beasts

Mini-beasts is a favourite topic with younger children.  They enjoy finding out about the beasts and creepy crawlies that live in their gardens and surrounding countryside.  Children will have come across a lot of the creatures and so have an interest and experience to build on.  This background knowledge children have picked up makes this a powerful topic for learning.

Below you'll lots of FREE Mini-beast topic pages.  These pages include adverts.

When a school SUBSCRIBES to Learning Huddle the pages have NO ADVERTS.

We hope that you enjoy the pages.  Please have a look in our shop which lots of interesting things.

Mini-beasts:  Overview

There are many stories that children have heard about min-beasts.  Some of them are true and others are just myths.  We reveal some of the facts behind some of the most common myths.  We also look at the various classes of mini-beast and find out all about them.

Mini-beasts:  A-B

There are ants and bees with lots of photos and interesting facts. They are accompanied by bees, beetles, bugs and insects, and butterflies.  Each section covers interesting facts and shows lots of photos that can be used in projects.  Perhaps you can produce a sheet of mini-beast photos for children to search out in their gardens.

A favourite with children is the earthworm.  They've seen and played with them in their gardens.  They seem to love the slimy fee!  There are others here too: flies and frogs, cockroaches and crickets.  Lots to keep you minds active..

Mini-beasts: G-R

Ladybirds are the mini-beast that children are most likely to have come across in this section.  However they'll have heard of the others too.  They can have great fun imitating the noise of a grasshopper or searching for moths with their parents at night.

Mini-beasts: S-R

This final section contains some of the animals people don't like - SPIDERS!  Why not get children to collect them and bring them into school.  Start a creepy collection and excite the children and perhaps remove some of the fear that often surrounds spiders.  Alternatively why not collect some stick insects as classroom pets and learn all about them.

We cover the major aspects of mini-beasts:

- What is a mini-beast
- What are the various mini-beast groups
- Specific beasts like spiders
- Specific beasts like frogs and flies
- Unusual mini-beasts

The helpful photographs and simple text provide accurate resources for the pupils to choose from.  All of the pages provide quick links to other parts of the topic and include our "internal page" adverts.

Adverts encourage pupils to fully explore the topic but include no offsite links.  Pupils feel like they are exploring and teachers can be confident it's safe for them to explore.

We pick out interesting details about the mini-beasts and focus on things that children might have already have heard about.  This helps the children to feel at ease with the topic and so more inclined to learn.  For example:

- Ants
- Bees
- Cockroaches
- Flies
- Grasshoppers
- Mantis

  and many more ...

We try hard to make sure the information covered is relevant and child friendly.

The pages in the mini-beast topic are filled with helpful photographs and easy to read text.  Pupils can click on all the photographs.  Clicking on the photo launches a new page (or browser tab) which then shows a larger version of the photograph.

The larger photos are great for building classroom displays or for undertaking classroom activities.

A great way to use the site is to help pupils build cards about mini-beasts they might find in their environment.  They can help to cut and paste photos onto cards that they can then take home (or into the school garden) to find mini-beasts.
