There are many stories that you
might have heard about mini-beasts. Some of them are
true while others are just myths.
Below we reveal
the facts behind some of the most common mini-beast
tales. |

This is false!
- Daddy long legs are actually crane
flies, not spiders.
- They don’t bite people.
- There is no evidence that their
poison is dangerous to humans.
This story is actually
true.
- This only happens with female bees.
- When they sting, their sting comes
off and tears a hole in their abdomen.
- This only happens if they sting a
mammal as our skin is thicker than that of insects or other
species.
- Most bees are usually very
peaceful. They only sting if they feel that they are in
danger.
This
is false.
It’s not impossible for
a spider to crawl into someone’s open mouth while they are
sleeping. However, there are no scientific studies that show
this actually happens, let alone 8 times every year!
This
is totally false!
Bugs can crawl into
your ears if they’re small enough but they won’t be able to get
very far! The eardrum would stop them going any further.
- Earwigs are actually totally
harmless to people.
- They eat plants and small insects.
- Their pincers look nasty but are
used for self-defence or catching prey.
