The mouse is an accessory for a computer that allows for fast and easy access.

You can point, click, and navigate easily using your mouse. With a laptop, you don’t necessarily need one, but many people add them as an accessory.

Different types of Mouse

Mouse with cordThe standard mouse is the kind that plugs into the back of your computer with a cable. They come with a very long cord. This is called a mechanical mouse. It must be set on a flat surface to work properly.

There is also an optical mouse. An optical mouse uses a sensor to perform its tasks. You can get a cordless optical mouse. It is easy to use with a laptop. You will need some extra software to install a cordless mouse.

A joystick mouse is used for video games. This lets you use it as you would a home gaming console controller. A joystick mouse lets you enjoy your game without having to adjust your movements to a standard mouse.

How the Mouse Allows Information to get to Your Computer

Pink mouseAn optical mouse uses a camera to take lots of pictures every second (about 1,500). The mouse has a small, red light-emitting diode (LED) that bounces light off the surface that is it on.  This light is picked up by a metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) sensor.

The sensor sends each picture to a processor for analysis. The processor is able to detect patterns in the images and see how those patterns have changed. Based on the change over a sequence of images, the processor determines how far the mouse has moved and sends the coordinates to the computer.

The computer moves the cursor on the screen based on the information received from the mouse. This all happens hundreds of times each second.

Other things a mouse can do

If you right-click on a mouse, you will be able to do extra things. This can make it fast and easy to save information, to send files and to delete what you don’t need.

A mouse often has a wheel in the centre of it.  If you roll the wheel up and down the computer screen will often roll up and down as well.
