Computers

This topic proves popular with children because they now use computers everyday.  Computers are familiar to them and so they are keen to learn more about them.  We've included two example pages, one about The Computer Mouse and one about Computer Privacy.

All of the pages in this topic can be printed out for use in the classroom.  You can also easily copy and paste the text and images into another document which enables the easy creation of custom teaching materials.  For example you could simply cut and paste some of the text across into a document and then add some questions or activities into the sheet.

We cover the major aspects of the Computers:

- An overview of the computer
- An explanation about hardware
- An explanation about software
- The internet and internet safety
- Computers and their use in everyday life

There are lots of pages and photographs for the pupils to choose from.  All of the pages provide quick links to other parts of the computer topic and include our "internal page" adverts.  These adverts encourage pupils to fully explore the topic but include no offsite links.  The pupils get the experience of the internet but without the hazards.

We've picked out interesting areas of computing that children might have already have heard of.  This helps the children to feel at ease with the topic and so more inclined to learn.  For example:

- Printers
- Microphones
- Digital cameras
- Word processors
- Spreadsheets
- Email

  and many more ...

We try hard to make sure the themes are relevant and child friendly.

The pages in the Computer topic are filled with photographs.  Pupils can click on all the photographs.  Clicking on the photo launches a new page (or browser tab) which then shows a larger version of the photograph.

The larger photos are great for building classroom displays.  A great use for them is to build a wall showing all the areas within the Computing pages.

One idea is to build a "virtual network" of computers around the classroom connected together by string.  You could even extend the computer network to include other classrooms and the concept of the WAN.
