Castles

Castles are exciting!  Children grow up with images of knights and princesses.  They love all the pageantry and heroic deeds. Pupils think about being the princess or the knight and their imagination takes over.  They get really excited about everything to do with castles.  We've included two example pages, one about Castle kids and one about Knights.

Like all of our topics, all of the pages in this topic can be printed out for use in the classroom.  It's really fun and simple for children to cut and paste pictures of the castles and then try to place them on a big map of the UK.  You (or the pupils) can also easily copy and paste the text and images into another document which enables the easy creation castle cards or other castle materials.

We cover the major aspects of Castles and life at the castle:

- People in a castle
- Building a castle
- Life in a castle
- Jobs at a castle
- Famous castles

The pages and photographs provide a great set of resources for the pupils to choose from.  All of the pages provide quick links to other parts of the castle topic and include our "internal page" adverts.

These adverts encourage pupils to fully explore the topic but include no offsite links.  Pupils feel like they are exploring and teachers can be confident it's safe for them to explore.

We've picked out interesting details about castles and castle life.  We focus on things that children might have already have heard of.  This helps the children to feel at ease with the topic and so more inclined to learn.  For example:

- Windsor castle
- Edinburgh castle
- Vaccinations
- Armourers
- Knights
- Nobles

  and many more ...

We try hard to make sure the information covered is relevant and child friendly.

The pages in the Castle topic are filled with photographs and easy to read text.  Pupils can click on all the photographs.  Clicking on the photo launches a new page (or browser tab) which then shows a larger version of the photograph.

The larger photos are great for building classroom displays.

One idea is to create a castle game.  The pupils design a large board with squares that a pupil can stand on.  The squares include pictures of the famous castles.  Pupils then form teams and they race round the board trying to visit the castles as the progress.  Pupils can dress up as knights, princesses or any other character from the castle era.
