Animals

Children love animals.  They encounter them everywhere they go and enjoy finding out about them.  Pupils will have encountered lots of animals in their lives and are always keen to know more about them.  This background knowledge that pupils have makes this a powerful topic for learning.  We've included two example pages, one about Cheetah and one about Jaguar.

Like all of our topics, all of the pages in this topic can be printed out for use in the classroom.  Pupils can prepare cards and information packs about individual animals.

 

We cover lots of animals:

- Big cats
- Monkeys and apes
- Different types of birds

The accurate text provide helpful photographs provide great ready to use resources for the pupils.  All of the pages provide quick links to other parts of the topic and include our "internal page" adverts. 

Adverts encourage pupils to fully explore the topic but include no offsite links.  Pupils feel like they are exploring and teachers can be confident it's safe for them to explore.  All the adverts are photo based so pupils don't need to be great readers to enjoy the site.
 

   

We pick out interesting animals to focus on.  Animals that children might already know about.  This helps the children to feel at ease with the topic and so more inclined to learn.  For example:

The pages in the Animals topic are filled with helpful photographs and easy to read text.  Pupils can click on all the photographs.  Clicking on the photo launches a new page (or browser tab) which then shows a larger version of the photograph.

The larger photos are great for building classroom displays or for undertaking classroom activities. 

A great way to use the site is to help pupils build cards about animals they might find in their environment.  They can help to cut and paste photos onto cards and then add information about the different animals.  You could get different groups to create cards on the various animal groupings and then store them in a reference box.
